It is probably impossible to find one theoretical expression that perfectly describes the relationship between the citizens and the spaces of the city in its complexity. This complicated relationship is nuanced by such complex terms like heterotopia, non-place, private space, community space and public space. In the last couple of years a kind of modern use of space can be observed, while the classical social role of the public space seems to cease. However, it is an interesting question how culture and the cultural institutions contribute to the understanding of this complicated relationship. How can culture serve as a means to comprehend the sometimes controversial, diverse structure of the city?

The project aims to reflect on the city as an ever changing (in terms of space and composition as well), elusive phenomenon and on the abstract and tangible borders that sometimes separate, sometimes connect us.

The installations realized in frames of the Urban Borders project are attempts to physically intervene in the urban space and they all try to show the visible and invisible city borders with the means of contemporary art.
