The lagoon is a shallow bay of a sea, partially or entirely closed off by sand islands or shoals. They have saltwater or brackish water, but if locked off from sea entirely, they lose salinity and turn to seaside lakes. Mónika Kárándi’s works in Telep Gallery share this quality of separation and isolation.

These works are based on the particularities of this natural phenomenon as well as sprouts, fruits and leaves of tropical plants. However, these symbols are deformed, and the strange world thus created forms its own, unique Eden on the flat fabric of the paintings. Here, impossible and almost bizarre creatures enjoy the paradisiac circumstances. The curve of the panel paintings is reminiscent of the half-closed, encompassing space of the lagoon. The elements and forms depicted on the plane of the canvas all go through some sort of distortion. The unity of the resulting separate entity is further reinforced by the collage-like process of image creation.

The joyful sensations and feelings associated with the material reality of the lagoon are devoid of any convention of society, they are idyllic. She is looking for conditions in memory, distorted through time. just like how the depicted plants or their details are distorted. Utilising the variety of emotions, there is a possibility to create a new, a parallel world, where the impulses and symbols of Mónika Kárándi come to life. This seemingly surreal world mirrors Kárándi’s relationship to life and art, shown as subjective and fallible. This opaque peccability envelops the works, defending them from reality.
